Music

Music is a vibrant and valued part of life at Bathford Church School. Through singing, listening, composing and performing, children develop confidence, creativity and a lifelong appreciation of music.

Our Vision for Music

At Bathford Church School, our vision of Grow, Care, Serve, Share is at the heart of our Music curriculum.

We believe that all children should have the opportunity to experience the joy of music and develop their musical talents. Through a wide range of musical experiences, children are encouraged to express themselves creatively, work collaboratively and develop confidence as performers and listeners.

Music helps children connect with others, explore different cultures and traditions, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. We want children to leave Bathford with a love of music and the confidence to continue their musical journey beyond primary school.

What Do Children Learn?

We use the GetSet4Music scheme to provide a progressive music curriculum from Reception to Year 6.

Children develop their understanding of:

  • Listening and appraising music
  • Singing
  • Playing and performing
  • Composing and improvising
  • Musical vocabulary
  • Rhythm, pitch and pulse
  • Different musical styles and traditions

As children move through the school, they revisit and build upon musical knowledge and skills, helping them to develop increasing confidence and musical understanding.

Developing as Musicians

Children develop as musicians through three interconnected areas:

  • Listen – exploring and responding to a wide range of musical styles, traditions and genres.
  • Compose – creating, improvising and developing their own musical ideas.
  • Perform – singing, playing and sharing music with confidence and enjoyment.

These strands are revisited throughout children's time at Bathford, helping them build knowledge, skills and confidence as musicians.

How Do Children Learn?

Music lessons are practical, enjoyable and inclusive, giving every child the opportunity to participate and succeed.

Children learn through:

  • Singing
  • Listening and responding to music
  • Playing instruments
  • Composing and improvising
  • Performing to others
  • Exploring a wide range of musical genres and traditions

The curriculum follows a progressive approach, allowing children to revisit key musical concepts through different activities and experiences, helping them to deepen and secure their understanding over time.

Alongside curriculum lessons, children have opportunities to take part in collective worship, performances, concerts, choir and other musical experiences that enrich their learning.

What Will Children Take Away?

Through Music, children develop:

  • Confidence and self-expression
  • Creativity and imagination
  • Listening and communication skills
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Performance skills
  • Musical knowledge and vocabulary
  • An appreciation of different musical styles, cultures and traditions

We want our children to leave Bathford as enthusiastic and confident musicians who enjoy music and understand the important role it plays in bringing people together.

The Long-Term Plan shows the musical knowledge, skills and experiences taught across the school and how learning develops over time.

Music Long-term plan

The Music Development Plan outlines how we deliver music through curriculum lessons, wider musical opportunities and enrichment experiences, as well as our plans for future development.
