Computing
Computing is an essential part of modern life. Through computing, children learn how technology works, how to use it safely and responsibly, and how they can use their knowledge and creativity to solve problems and shape the world around them.
Our Vision for Computing
At Bathford Church School, our vision of Grow, Care, Serve, Share is at the heart of our Computing curriculum.
We want all children to become confident, responsible and creative users of technology. Through computing, children develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand and participate in an increasingly digital world.
Computing encourages children to think logically, solve problems, work collaboratively and express themselves creatively. We also place a strong emphasis on helping children understand how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.
What Do Children Learn?
We follow the Teach Computing Curriculum, developed by the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE), which provides a carefully sequenced curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum.
Children develop their understanding of three key areas:
- Computer Science
- Information Technology
- Digital Literacy
Throughout their time at Bathford, children learn about:
- Programming and coding
- Algorithms and computational thinking
- Creating digital media
- Data and information
- Computer systems and networks
- Online communication and collaboration
- Digital citizenship
- Online safety
As children move through the school, they build on previous learning and develop increasing confidence, independence and technical understanding.
Thinking Like Computer Scientists
At Bathford, children develop their understanding of computing through five key areas:
- Technology Around Us – understanding how digital systems and networks work.
- Creating Media – designing and creating digital content.
- Information and Data – collecting, organising and interpreting information.
- Programming – creating and debugging algorithms and programs.
- Online Safety – learning how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.
These areas are revisited throughout the curriculum, helping children build confidence, technical knowledge and digital skills over time.
How Do Children Learn?
Computing is taught through practical, engaging and meaningful experiences that allow children to explore technology and apply their skills in a range of contexts.
Children learn through:
- Programming and coding activities
- Creating digital content
- Solving problems and debugging programs
- Working collaboratively
- Exploring how technology is used in the wider world
- Discussing the benefits and risks of technology
Children are encouraged to think critically about technology and understand its impact on their lives and society.
In Key Stage 2, computing is taught as part of our mixed-age afternoon learning model, providing opportunities for children to learn alongside peers from different year groups, share ideas and collaborate on projects.
Online Safety
Online safety is a key part of our Computing curriculum and wider school life.
We use Project Evolve, which is based on the UK Council for Internet Safety's Education for a Connected World framework, to support children's understanding of safe and responsible online behaviour.
Children learn about:
- Self-image and identity
- Online relationships
- Health, wellbeing and lifestyle
- Privacy and security
Through this learning, children develop the knowledge and confidence needed to stay safe online, make responsible choices and seek support when necessary.
What Will Children Take Away?
Through Computing, children develop:
- Confidence in using technology
- Computational thinking and problem-solving skills
- Creativity and innovation
- Digital literacy
- Online safety awareness
- Collaboration and communication skills
- An understanding of technology's role in the modern world
We want our children to leave Bathford as confident, responsible and informed digital citizens who are equipped to thrive in an ever-changing technological world.
Computing Curriculum
At Bathford Church School, we use the Teach Computing Curriculum to provide a progressive computing education from Year 1 to Year 6.
The documents below show how computing knowledge, skills and online safety understanding develop throughout the primary years.
