Our Curriculum

At Bathford Church School, our vision of Grow, Care, Serve, Share and our values of Be Your Best, Be Kind, Be Respectful and Be a Team are at the heart of everything we do. Our curriculum is designed to give children the knowledge, skills and values they need to understand the world around them and become caring, responsible citizens.

We want learning to be engaging, meaningful and memorable. Through a broad and balanced curriculum, children develop academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually, while discovering their strengths, interests and talents.

Our Vision for Learning

Our curriculum is shaped by four key principles:

Grow

We provide opportunities for children to grow both as learners and as individuals.

Learning is carefully planned so that knowledge and skills build progressively over time, helping children to remember more and do more. Alongside academic achievement, we nurture confidence, resilience, creativity and positive mental health. We want children to become curious, reflective learners who understand the purpose and value of their learning.

Care

We want children to care about their learning, their community and the wider world.

Our curriculum helps children develop a strong understanding of our school values whilst promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. Children learn to appreciate similarities and differences, challenge stereotypes and show respect for others.

Serve

Our curriculum encourages children to think beyond themselves and understand their role in the wider world.

Three key themes run throughout our curriculum:

  • Identity and Diversity
  • Social Justice and Equity
  • Sustainable Development

These themes help children make connections between their learning, their local community and global issues, supporting them to become active, informed and responsible citizens.

Share

Children are encouraged to discuss, collaborate and communicate their learning.

Through sharing ideas, debating issues and working together, children develop connections with one another, their community and the wider world. We aim to develop confident communicators who can express their thoughts clearly and listen respectfully to others.

What Do Children Learn?

Our curriculum provides full coverage of the National Curriculum whilst reflecting the distinctive values and priorities of Bathford Church School.

Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build on previous knowledge and skills, revisit important concepts and deepen their understanding over time.

We are pleased to share our curriculum long-term plans with parents. These plans provide an overview of the learning children will experience throughout the year in each subject.

How Is Learning Organised?

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to meet the needs of all learners, including those in our mixed-age classes.

Learning is mapped across each child's journey through the school to ensure that all pupils receive the same breadth and depth of learning, regardless of which class they are in. Additional units have been included where necessary to ensure that all children receive their full curriculum entitlement by the end of Year 6.

Teachers use this long-term structure to plan engaging lessons that respond to children's interests, current events and opportunities that arise throughout the year while maintaining progression and curriculum coverage.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.

Learning is organised through the EYFS areas of learning and development and is carefully planned to support children in working towards the Early Learning Goals. Through a balance of play-based learning, exploration, practical experiences and direct teaching, children develop the foundations they need for future learning.

What Will Children Take Away?

By the time children leave Bathford Church School, we want them to:

  • Be knowledgeable, curious and motivated learners.
  • Have strong literacy, numeracy and communication skills.
  • Think creatively and critically.
  • Show kindness, respect and resilience.
  • Understand their role within both local and global communities.
  • Appreciate diversity and champion equality.
  • Be well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school.

Our curriculum is designed not only to help children achieve academically, but also to help them flourish as confident, caring and responsible young people.

Curriculum Documents

Our curriculum long-term plans provide an overview of the learning children experience in each subject and how knowledge and skills develop over time.

Please note that these plans provide an overview of intended learning. Teachers may adapt aspects of the curriculum to respond to children's interests, current events and opportunities that arise throughout the year, ensuring learning remains engaging, relevant and purposeful.
